SMK Co., Ltd. Interview with Engineering Journal,
Enhancing usability through energy transition technology
Recently, domestic ESS (Energy Storage System) sector has been focusing on the development of technologies that can prevent risk factors such as battery thermal runaway, while also enhancing energy efficiency.
In particular, there are ongoing attempts at various innovations, from battery thermal management systems that can prevent thermal runaway, to battery pack charging technology, to portable ESSs that can be used in various applications beyond simple ESS.
SMK Co., Ltd., a company with various experiences and patents related to battery packs and charging stations, is trying to diversify through technologies such as BMS, a major component of battery packs, structural design, solutions for preventing thermal runaway, and battery thermal management systems that allow the operation of batteries even in extreme environments (-50 degrees). They are infusing vitality into the energy industry.
Another major technology of SMK Co., Ltd. in the charger field is that they have developed technology for current variability, which allows step-by-step selection of current and a One Input & Multi Output system, raising energy efficiency to over 90%. The unique design allows for automatic cut-off of output when the product is off, facilitated by the communication between the charger and the product, thus providing convenience to users.
Since its establishment in 2009, SMK Co., Ltd. grew as an initial electronic component distribution business and achieved results such as achieving $7 million in exports in 2019 when it jumped into the energy industry. To pioneer overseas markets, the company entered the market through the establishment of a corporation in Hungary in 2019 and Vietnam in 2020. In 2022, they were certified as a specialized trading company and an ESG excellent company, and are currently conducting a project to advance material, parts, and equipment technology by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy.
