*Korean shared scooter platform XingXing is planning to upgrade the waterproof rating of its batteries to IP68. Most of the industry currently operates at a level between IP65 and IP67. The IP68 rating ensures
that even if the battery is submerged during the monsoon season, it remains waterproof and can withstand submersion at a depth of 1 meter for more than 30 minutes. The development of this IP68 rated battery
product was a joint effort by PUMP, Peopleworks, and Intops, with SMK participating. / 2020.12.30
"Electric scooter sharing platform XingXing in Korea is upgrading the waterproof rating of its batteries."
PUMP, the operator of XingXing, announced on the 30th that it will upgrade the waterproof rating of the scooter's battery to IP68. The development has been completed, and after going through the KC
certification process, it will be applied to the product in the first half of next year.
The waterproof rating used in existing XingXing is IP67, which is waterproof during rain, and most of the industry is using batteries with a waterproof rating between IP65 and IP67. Among these, the IP68 that
XingXing will support is a grade that can be waterproofed even when submerged during the rainy season. It is the highest waterproof rating in the international standard (IEC60529), which is waterproof for more than 30 minutes at a water depth of 1m. The IP68 rated waterproof battery was jointly developed by PUMP, PeopleWorks, and Intops (participated by SMK).
Choi Ki-young, the head of PUMP's Hardware (HW) team, said, “If the battery is not waterproofed, it is not just a malfunction, but can lead to the aging of the internal pack/cell, which can lead to a high likelihood of a fire. It is the same principle as electric vehicles paying attention to not only battery charging and discharging, but also waterproofing and heat generation.” He also expressed hope that "the newly developed
waterproof battery will be able to serve stably as it is manufactured in a structure similar to that of electric vehicles."
